Using Framing in your eCommerce Merchandising

“Framing” is a positioning technique to use when merchandising. It is especially handy in eCommerce, because it positions a discounted product more effectively against a similar non-discounted product. Let me explain further. The Background: Typically, a retailer will advertise a loss-leader product in order to get traffic to their store or web site. You typically this tactic when you look in the Sunday newspaper for “deals” on food or products throughout the year or around Thanksgiving with the “Black Friday” sales. The retailer doesn’t have an unlimited supply of the product nor are they willing to make a smaller margin indefinitely selling the loss-leader products. The loss-leader is a way to get people into the...

It’s even higher for mobile subscribers under 45 years of age – 50 percent) Finally, The Pew Internet Project falls in the middle of the range, saying that 42 percent of mobile phone users now have converted to Smartphones. Is Foursquare Stable Enough to Make it?

As a social media consultant, I often advise brick and mortor merchants to setup their businesses on FourSquare. It’s free. It works in attracting and marketing your business. What’s not to like? That said, I’ve often had challenges “checking into” various business when I have physically arrived at their front door. The API seems to be constantly “down” and tells you to try back later or there is no response at all, which just leaves one to wonder what exactly is going on. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to participate in social media and having a major social media provider not be able to keep its system up and running. Who wants to play a game when you don’t always get your turn to play? Add to...

eCommerce Revenue Equation

Here’s an eCommerce revenue formula I recent saw posted by Harry Joiner, the eCommerce Recruitment Executive at ecommercerecruiter.com. Harry is a strategic thinker and the eCommerce “go-to-guy” when it comes to personnel recruiting and expertise in the eCommerce space. He has watched the eCommerce industry grow from obscurity to prominence. The formula is basic in nature, but all encompassing in scope. The eCommerce revenue formula is: REV = ((MUVx12) x (1+ (MVG% / 100))) x AOV x ((CR% / 100) x (1+ CRG% / 100))) Variables defined: REV is Revenue MUV is Monthly Unique Visitors MVG% = Growth in MUV AOV is Average Order Value CR is Conversion % CRG% = Growth in CR% The MVG% and CRG% are variables that Harry uses to assist in setting goals for a new...

Sales Management

I had the priviledge of meeting with a friend of mine this morning over breakfast. I’ll call him Bill, just to save any¬†embarrassment. He has his own business and has been struggling the past few years in a down economy. He explained that his revenues had dropped about 75% and he had cut his staff by about the same percentage. His frustration related to finding more revenue and closing more sales. He has two sales people and is behind in producing enough revenue monthly to break even; the proverbial death spiral. As we talked I focused on several factors: Three Questions: How does he track sales opportunities through the sales funnel How much time does he spend with his sales personnel on sales calls What metrics is he using to judge sales...

Here’s an easy way to visualize the criteria that affects the search engine ranking algorithms. While not something I developed (www.seachengineland.com did), I have been referring to it as I write content and strategize on how to push web sites up the rage rank result pages. I think its a solid way to approach SEO.¬†This image also shows possible additional points or deducted points for each associated SEO ranking factor, giving the reader the opportunity to understand the weighting of each SEO variable. Redeploying a WordPress Site

I recently had trouble with my dedicated web server from GoDaddy (Note: this is not a complaint about GoDaddy). All of the databases on the server were getting corrupted. The error message was: “Error establishing a database connection”. Not sure what the cause was, but I knew I needed to get all of my sites operational again, and rebooting the server every 2 hours was not the solution. After finding another hosting company, I proceeded to start moving my WordPress web sites. Here are the steps I used to perform the move: 1. I took screen shots of the home page so I knew what content was on each widget. 2. I exported the content to an XML file using the WordPress Export function located under the “tools” section. 3. I synced all of my files...
